The Year In Photos

December 27th, 2007 Posted in life, photography

If you remember way back to last year, I promised myself that I would complete a photography project called My Life in 365 Pictures, a photo a day project that I thought I would quit about ten days into. Surprise, particularly to myself, that I was successful. I took a photo a day for an entire year. I have to do some organizing in Flickr to get all the photos tagged, but you can see all my photos here. I am debating whether I should do this again for next year. On the one hand, I loved looking through this collection and loving all the moments I captured that I would never have captured if this project didn’t force me to take my camera everywhere I went. On the other hand, this thing was hard work. I felt, somewhere around day two hundred, a lot of my photos were growing redundant, but I hope that the unique photos far out weigh the ones that look like others. The following photos are some of my favorites, in some form of chronological order.

This was the hottest January day ever recorded in New York City, with the temperature rising to just above seventies degrees. Good thing we don’t have to worry about that whole global warming thing.

I wanted to bring this dog home with me. He had the most adorable set of ears I’ve ever seen.

I don’t know why I like this picture so much, but I think it has something to do with the colors and the moon.

There was a gas explosion in an house across the street from my apartment building. I never felt more happy to have the firehouse a near block away from my house.

My summer started off with a beautiful wedding. The weather could not have been more perfect.

Shea Stadium’s days are numbered. I plan on enjoying the thrill of watching a Mets game in the cheap seats often before this park disappears for good.

This shot is such a quintessentially “summer in New York” shot. I don’t think suburban kids get the whole “playing in pools of water in public parks” thing, but if you are a kid who grew up here, you know that this is about as summer as it gets.

A shot from the Getty Villa in Malibu. If you can make it there, I highly recommend it.

This was taken a few days after I saw Daft Punk in Brooklyn. Why is that relevant? Well, I was trying to recreate their light show with the filter of my camera, the sun and my hand. I failed.

I made it down to Coney Island twice this summer. The New York Aquarium is a nice place to spend a lazy summer afternoon. I would take credit for the genius of this photograph, but it was their lighting. I just snapped it.

Sex. No, really sex. I saw a burlesque show with Margaret Cho. Like I said, sex.

A sudden summer thunderstorm. I love the New York City skyline.

Months later, I still don’t know what the hell this sign means. I mean, I know, but what exactly is sweet and nasty burlesque?

Lez Zeppelin. Live.

One of my friends from the U.K. playing arcade games in some crappy seaside store just outside Norfolk.

This might just be my favorite picture of the year. My friend and the bride were dancing when the groom appeared and the bride ran away from my friend as if she was caught doing something evil. Well, the dancing was … slightly evil. :)

The West End in London. I miss London. I really do.

This is a case of seeing something you’ve seen a thousand times through entirely new eyes just because you had a camera lens.

There is nothing better in life than a good meal with good friends.

…except, of course, sharing a drink and a laugh with good friends.
